Car Theft Prevention

By: Nicole Tomassetti

Five Easy Steps to Prevent Car Theft and Vandalism

A vehicle is stolen every 28.8 seconds in the U.S., according to tracking and recovery system provider LoJack Corporation. This statistic can be unsettling - especially given the amount of money you've invested in your car and how much you rely on it. To help keep your car from getting stolen or vandalized, follow these 5 easy guidelines.

1. Choose the right location

Location can be everything when it comes to preventing car theft and vandalism. If you have a garage, always park your car in it when you're at home. And always keep your car locked, even when it's inside the garage.

If you park in the street, choose a well-lighted area. When parking in public lots, try to find one that is well-lighted and has nearby security cameras and parking attendants; thieves and vandals don't want an audience.

2. Make it difficult to tow your car

There are a few tricks to make it harder for thieves to tow your vehicle away. When parking on the street, turn your wheels in toward the curb. When in a driveway or parking lot, turn your wheels sideways. And use your emergency brake every time you park (not just on hills).

3. Use security alarms and immobilizers

Many newer vehicles are equipped with factory-installed alarm systems that help deter car thieves and vandals. If you have an older car, several after-market alarms are available, including door, shock and tilt sensors.

In addition, you can immobilize your car while you're away - especially for long periods. Kill switches and starter, ignition and fuel cut-offs are a few ways to prevent car theft.

4. Invest in theft recovery

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) etching is an inexpensive, and often effective, method for theft recovery. Having your vehicle's VIN etched onto its windows and major parts can make it easier to track. Another way to help you recover your car more quickly is a tracking and recovery system that uses a radio frequency signal to alert law enforcement officials.

5. Protect your car with insurance

Auto insurance is designed not only to cover you while you're driving, but also in the event of car theft. When requesting auto insurance quotes, be sure to include comprehensive coverage to protect you in the event of theft.

Avoid becoming another statistic. Remember to use multiple security layers for your best chance at car theft prevention. Combining any or all 5 of these strategies can help deter potential thieves and vandals, and keep your car safe.
